Early Life and Education
Li Delun, often hailed as the father of classical music in China, was born in 1917 into an official's family in Beijing. He began his musical journey at Fu Jen Catholic University of Peking, where he majored in history and joined the school orchestra. His early exposure to music led him to pursue further studies in music, particularly the cello, at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1940. This marked the beginning of a lifelong dedication to music and conducting.
Studies and Career in the Soviet Union
In 1953, Li Delun was admitted to the prestigious Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied conducting until 1957. His education there was pivotal; it equipped him with the skills that would later define his career and contribute significantly to the development of classical music in China. Upon returning to China, Li became a key figure in promoting classical music, organizing "weekend concerts" in Beijing during the 1950s and 60s, a time when cultural exchanges were limited.
Legacy and Recognition
Li Delun's legacy is cherished in China and beyond. He is recognized for his efforts in nurturing a generation of Chinese conductors and musicians. His centenary was celebrated with a special concert by the China National Symphony Orchestra, where nine conductors who had learned from or worked with him, including Tang Muhai and Yu Long, came together to honor his contributions. Li's influence persists through the many musicians and conductors who continue to promote classical music in China and inspire audiences worldwide. Article reference1.
